MATTHEW ARNOLD

Born on 24 December 1822, Matthew Arnold was a renowned English poet, writer and critique. Although he is better known for his famous works of critical essays, he started his career as a poet. Having won the Newdigate Prize for his poem 'Cromwell', he graduated with second class honors from the Oxford University. Arnold made his way to fame after publishing collections of his poems, namely 'Empedocles on Etna, and Other Poems' and 'Poems: A New Edition'. After earning the post of a professor in Oxford University, Arnold published a number of critical work, compiled in the collection 'Essays in Criticism' and 'Culture and Anarchy'. He is regarded as one of the three great Victorian poets, along with Alfred Tennyson and Robert Browning. Through his poems, he showcased the voices and minds of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. A man of wisdom, Matthew has inspired thousands of young minds to follow their passion and believe in themselves.
